Do you wonder why your cat insists on using its sharp claws to tear up everything you own? We can get some clues from this guy. (LOOK AT TIGER) Wow, can you imagine what those claws could do to your couch?! Most clawing habits are descended from they way cats use their claws in the wild. One reason cats claw is to maintain the condition of their nails. This guy here would just use a tree, but your cat may use the trim around your door as a substitute. They also claw to mark their territory—visually and with scent. Luckily, there are ways to protect your property. Declawing is one option, but not everyone wants to declaw their cat, so here are some other ideas.

First, you want to be sure to trim your cat's claws regularly. When the cat is relaxed and unafraid, gently press on the toes until the claws extend. Use a pair of nail clippers and cut only the tip of the nail, taking care not to damage the vein. The nail hook is what tears upholstery, so removing it virtually eliminates damage.

Buy or build two or more scratching posts, but not the carpet kind. They must be sturdy, with a somewhat rough exterior and tall enough to allow the cat to stretch (usually about three feet). Place one post where your cat usually claws, and another where the cat usually sleeps. You can also strategically place double sided tape on unacceptable scratching places when you're training your cat. Eventually, the cat will only use the posts and your furniture will finally be spared. Just be thankful your cat doesn't have paws like this.
